You expected the fundies to be in a hissy fit over Obama's decision this summer to extend Family and Medical Leave Act coverage to same-sex partners. But how far are they willing to go? Matt Barber of Liberty Counsel thinks this is an impeachable offense.
"He has, via unconstitutional executive fiat, unilaterally and arbitrarily disregarded the federal Defense of Marriage Act, known as DOMA, which states that the federal government only recognizes legitimate marriage as between one man and one woman," Barber contends.
But he is hopeful the voting public will send a message to the president.
"After November 2, it's my hope that some gutsy legislators in Congress will begin to look at this and other legally dubious actions by this president to determine if we may have high crimes and misdemeanors here on the part of this despotic man," the Liberty Counsel attorney adds.
Here we are, not even three months before the start of the next Congress, and already they're trolling around for possible impeachable offenses. Before you brush this off as hot air, remember that the religious right was largely responsible for the impeachment of Clinton.
This story illustrates how fundamentally skewed the religious right's priorities are. They're willing to lynch a president over picayune stuff like this, as we already saw with Clinton and they appear to be showing with Obama. Yet, a president commits war crimes, and there isn't even a peep.
At least, not publicly. Why don't we ask Barber about it? Email him at jmbarber at liberty dot edu (sorry, not even bottom-feeders like Barber deserve to be spammed).
