She is the only Democratic voting Cuban friend I have in Miami. Perhaps the younger second generation Cubans vote Democratic but not those over 40.
Anyways, a while ago (we were at the beach on a sunny Sept weekend), she said:
I don't mind if the Republicans win. Let them win. Because the truth is that this economy will not improve anytime soon and if the Republicans are in control of the government they will be blamed for the state of the economy and not Obama.
At the time, I told her I didn't think that would be the outcome and that I feared that GOPers and even worse the crazy tea baggers would make this country resemble a third world country just like Bush did. I told her they would repeal health care and do all kinds of shananighans.
But she said no. The Republicans will just be loud and do some minor damage but not much will change, probably nothing will change, the country will neither move forward nor backward. But the consequence from that is that people will get upset at the Republicans and in the 2012 elections they will vote for Democrats again.
Hey. I don't know if she is right, but I know that all economists are predicting a very slow economic recovery. I know that there will be very few new jobs created. Fact is, the only industry that is growing faster than any other is the high tech industry, but there aren't enough engineers in the US (I know, this is my field) and in other industries, many jobs are being replaced by computers... or outsourced.
But perhaps she has a point. Perhaps it's all for the best.
