Outrage over the bailouts fueled the tea party fury that swept Republicans to power last week, right?
Maybe, but I just can't get over the fact that the two top Republicans -- John Boehner and Eric Cantor -- both supported the TARP bailout. Here's the roll call vote.
Personally, I'm glad they supported TARP. I supported it as well. But I also think that if you're going to have a bailout, you also need Wall Street reform to prevent things from collapsing again. And they were steadfastly against that.
Their reward for supporting the bailouts and opposing reform? Being on the receiving end of a transfer of power driven by a movement that was supposedly inspired by an opposition to bailouts.
In the election, the tea partiers got what they asked for. But they won't end up getting what they want.
