Today is Veteran's Day. I am a veteran. I am a Vietnam Veteran. I spent 26 months in Vietnam. I served in the Army from 1969 to 1972. My last post was with MACV (Military Assistance Command Vietnam). I am a recipient of the Purple Heart.
I have been kicking around writing this diary all day long. So here it goes. If you want to criticize what I've got to say - plug it up and hold your tongue if you are not a veteran. If you are a veteran please identify your branch and time in service and criticize away. I know there are many opinions within those of us that served.
Let me say this up front. I am proud to have worn the uniform of the United States of America. I am proud of every person who has ever worn our country's uniform. You are true patriots and deserve the respect and admiration of all Americans!
With that said let me further say the following.
I am not proud that our country was in Vietnam. Back then we were also "changing hearts and minds". We were also "bringing democracy and freedom to the people". We went there on a lie. We did not accomplish our mission. I can still see the helicopters lifting people off the American Embassy. We lost!! Yes we LOST!!
I am proud that I was an active member of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War while still stationed in Vietnam.
I am proud that there were so many people joining the VVAW where I was stationed that they were selling VVAW uniform patches at the on-post PX.
I am proud that I protested against the war in Vietnam when I was discharged.
I am proud that I was directly responsible for getting the first American prisoners of war released from prison.
I am proud that I worked for the Veteran's Administration for 10 years.
I am not proud that I was the Agent Orange Coordinator for the Northwest Region when "dragging your feet" was the policy.
Now to bring it to the current times.
I am not proud that America is in Iraq!
I am not proud that America is in Afghanistan!
I am proud of Votevets.org
I am not happy that Jon Soltz has to return to Iraq but I am proud of him.
