For the past few years, I have been more of a lurker on this site and really haven't posted any diaries, feeling that pretty much everyone else was saying what I was feeling. But I have just reached a decision and I feel compelled to be very public about it. As of today, I have just switched my party affiliation from Democrat to Working Families Party. I can no longer be part of a party that is hell bent on self-destruction.
Yesterday's news about the White House willing to cave on extending the Bush Tax cuts was the last straw. I had hoped that Obama would be our generations FDR. Instead it appears that we have Reagan Lite and I cannot continue to go on defending Democrats who are constantly turning their backs on progressives. Last year I stopped giving money hoping that would send the message. That has not worked, so now I must leave the party that has left me.
For many years I have listened to people complain that there should be a "third party", and for years I have gone on to explain that the electoral math does not permit more than 2 "dominant" parties. From now on I am changing that message. The new message is, "I agree. And if you truly want to see a third party, then stop complaining about it and go register with that party." I'll still be a lurker here though...
