In today's Fresno Bee Saturday Op-Ed, Sabina Gonzalez of Communities for a New California speaks out "to protect the voting rights of our most underrepresented communities."
Gonzales examines the curious case in Fresno County of eliminating half of all polling places just two weeks prior to the election. The predictable and, some would argue, intended result was reduced voter turnout.
An impartial investigation by the Grand Jury is needed for a fair evaluation of the impacts caused by polling place closures and to determine if low-income households, seniors and communities of color were impacted more severely than others.
It was clear to CNC volunteers that there were not enough polling places in areas like southwest Fresno and downtown, and that voters were not adequately informed about this and other important changes that impacted their access to voting.
