Jimmy Carter is a real compassionate southerner. The south almost uniformly voted for him in 1976. He did so many good things for the people, and he is a progressive thinker environmentally.
Was the South sane at one point when they voted for Jimmy Carter (he swept the South in 1976)? What happened that allowed Ronald Reagan to get elected, and change things forever? Something obviously went wrong.
Some people think Ted Kennedy's primary cost him the election. Democrats were unenthusiastic to vote. Ronald Reagan only got in with 50%. There were people who saw Ronald Reagan for who he was. The republicans in Massachussetts thought he was too right-wing.
Others think it was a bad economy and the Iran hostage crisis, which made Carter look bad. Ronald Reagan's legendary framing of messages connected with lots of voters. It is so sad. Reagan brought in the backwards thinking. Our country started to head towards becoming messed up as a whole.
What do you think it was?
