Clinton surprisingly remains enormously popular with democrats. There's no accounting for taste. Clinton in his "twilight presidency" has forged a relationship with the Bushes. With George the 1st, he started the Katrina fund. I remember Habitat for the Humanities got $1 million from the fund in New Orleans. They've been criticized though, for building few homes. They also bought an historic warehouse in the Bywater in New Orleans for $1 million, and converted it to their needs, which includes a used furniture store. Then there's Habitat's Chinese drywall scandal, but that's a whole other story.
I know the carpenter who was evicted from that warehouse after Habitat bought it. They tried to rush him out, but he fought back, got a little community support, and was able at least to delay his eviction until he could find a suitable place to move his carpentry business.
Why share that story? It's a microcosm of the macrocosm. The rulers of both parties are disconnected and out of touch with the majority of Americans. The upper elite politicians that represent the interests of the most wealthy have learned to make a good show of philanthropy to keep a positive public face on corporate America...or at least, throw enough money at the vast, nonprofit network in this country to keep a lid on social ills, corruption on intent be damned.
This "philanthropy" though doesn't discount the fact that the lower and so-called middle income classes carry little weight when it comes to the formation of public policy. I lump both together into the working class. The working class has been under attack for a long time now. It's just that the attack has grown more fierce, and is now affecting those with a bit more means.
Clinton made a big show of representing the U.S. in Haiti. Yet few resources have made it there to rebuild the infrastructure. The excuse? Corruption. That's a bit laughable given that Blackwater, Halliburton and BP are still in business with the U.S. government. Pot. Kettle black. Now in Haiti, the Haitians are being subjected to an out of control cholera epidemic, courtesy the UN. Bill Clinton quickly loses interest.
Clinton helped in the rehabilitation of George Bush Sr., while President Obama continues that rehabbing of George Bush Sr., with the decision to award him the medal of freedom recently. A clear and cogent message is being played here. Playing footsie with the Bushes is selling out your principles. If I could see some sort of end game that is positive for the American people, I wouldn't come to these conclusions. It's that simple.
You either use your entire faculties to assess and judge what is happening around you, or you retreat into a hole, and strict ideology and loyalty based on illusions.
Clinton was trotted out to put a friendly and popular democratic face on a wealthy and elite created package of tax cut extensions and the estate tax cuts and the whole rotten package that is using the unemployed like a ping pong between parties. You have Obama complaining that the unemployed are being held hostage by the republicans, but isn't that exactly what he is doing with this package? Ultimately, the stage is being set for the sacrifice of Social Security with the payroll tax deduction.
What Obama, Clinton and the entire corporate owned face of the Democratic party leaders, with a few exceptions, didn't count on was this: how sick you are of getting kicked around, taken for granted, manipulated and discarded.
They feel they don't need you ultimately. Remember though, Machiavellian types don't plan well for the future when it comes to political fortunes. It is up to you to restructure your political efforts in a way that enhances the issues, the quality of life that you really care about.
The best recommendation I can make is to starve the old ways of your time, money and resources..and begin to create a political protest and structure that you can back with all of your heart and minds with no hesitation. You need to shore up your own political bases, internal political foundations. Who are you and what do you believe in? Not, "whom do you support?" It will be good to get to know you again.
Move quickly though. The country is running out of time.
