It sounds like an Onion headline, but it is brutally true. There is really only one response to all of the news around the president's domestic spying programs and consolidation of power:
The President has declared war on his own country and his own people.
I don't think this can be emphasized enough. Scott McClellan says this in the Times today: "This is about wartime surveillance of the enemy," he said. "And we don't ask our commanders to go to the court and ask for approval while they're trying to gain intelligence on the enemy."
If following the spirit of the U.S. Constitution is "asking for approval" and U.S. citizens are "the enemy", we are in serious trouble.
We are in serious trouble. We have a president who has declared war on all of us, and what this country stands for. When you hear that the president has taken abother liberty or is fighting the terrorists at home. There is only one reply: "The president has declared war on his own country."
