Got tired of seeing Michael Vick diaries over and over and over. I have, however, started to watch football recently. I used to just like seeing hunky guys, but I've started to actually be able to follow the game a little.
In any case, I decided to celebrate a liberal football player, Scott Fujita, to offset all the back-and-forth about Vick.
Adopted by Japanese-American parents, Fujita took the history of Japanese internment during WWII to heart and became an outspoken advocate for civil rights. ESPN magazine did a profile on him a few years back.
He also publicly advocates for gay and abortion rights.
Per the comments - Brendon Ayanbadejo of the Baltimore Ravens (in the foreground), is also a supporter of gay rights and marriage equality.
And, with that we move to the fact that football isn't just for straights and men!
Brian Sims was out of the closet as a gay man while playing college football. Hopefully, Fujita's advocacy will move the NFL forward so the day when guys like David Kopay and Esera Tualo don't have to wait until retirement to come out as professional football players.
More women are playing football now, too. There are a couple of YouTube clips from a documentary I'll need to see in full soon. Particularly inspiring is this interview with a woman who freed herself from an abusive relationship thanks to the power she found in football.
On a less political note - if someone could set me up on a date with Joey Harrington, I'd be very grateful.
Oh, and if you're going to gripe about Michael Vick, also gripe about Ben Roethlisberger, or STFU.
