I know it's popular here to dump on Chris Mathews....he is all too often stuck in the middle of the road, and we all know what you find in the middle of the road....road kill.
But I find him endearing, inexplicably... He's no Keith Olbermann, nor any Rachel Maddow. He's simply a honest kid from Philadelphia, who, let's be honest, devoted his career to the Democratic Party. Show the man some respect.
I listened to his eulogy, if you can call it that, to former Kennedy speech writer Ted Sorenson. He clearly admired the man. As he still does JFK. Mathews is a Catholic first, but his Democratic Party creds are hardly in suspect. He is a Democrat. Get over it. He is.
I'd rather have one Chris Mathews' in my foxhole than ten of any number of talking heads I can think of. It's amazing to me that he has been cariacatured the way he has been here. Sure...he's moderate...he's an effing CATHOLIC!!!! And I don't mean that Catholics are by definition effing....they are just very religious.
I don't for a moment doubt Chris Mathews' political inclinations. I think he is solidly in the "D" collumn.
He didn't write speeches for Ronald Reagan, for Christ's sake....he wrote them for Jimmy Carter. Give the man a f&cking break. He would write speeches for this president, if asked...and probably write better ones than the ones being written for him at present.
I think it's easy being Keith Olbermann...I think it is much less easy being Chris Mathews...Not because one is more obviously right than the other...it's not. Mathews speaks for probably 60% of America. Olbermann speaks more forcefully for about 30% of America. I agree with Keith, and I cheer sometimes...
But when Chris is on his game...I wish HE was still writing speeches for the president...cause he knows where the sweet spot is.
It's to the right of me...to be sure...but I'm not so arrogant to believe that the rest of America is where I am.
