Everyone, can we talk a bit about MoveOn and their ad contest winner, and what they might plan to do with it?
I am a supporter of MoveOn but I worry, in light of the huge fuss made by the RNC over those ads on their site and MoveOn's failure to see it coming, that they may be.. better at their ideals and organizational abilities than at their strategy on the national stage.
I heard a few soundbites from the winning ad just now on NPR, and now I hear they're considering running it during the Super Bowl. I know some folks would love to think an ad like this will immediately cause lots of average Americans to see the light about this corrupt administration.
But I just don't think it will accomplish what MoveOn might think it will.. and I strongly suspect it may well backfire on us, politically. Most people are not huge fans of political ads, and political ads during the single biggest television event of the year are even riskier as they're more likely than not to generate anger, and I don't mean anger at the president. Mixing politics with the Super Bowl is a very bad idea (NASCAR team sponsorship excepted). Just hearing they're considering it makes me suspect they're not big football fans, but what do I know. :)
I'm only saying this because I DO support MoveOn and what they stand for. I am however quite concerned that they are going to shoot themselves in the foot here, and perhaps all of us who oppose Bush in the process. What do you all think? I know someone who knows one of the founders and am considering sending a heartfelt message asking them to please reconsider the timing here.
and... Go Pats!
