Apologies if this has been previously posted; a search turned up nothing. That said...
A new LA Times story reports that Rumsfeld's office instructed military intelligence officers to "take the gloves off" while interrogating John Walker Lindh.
And they did. Lindh was propped up naked, tied to a stretcher, held for long periods in a large metal container, deprived of sleep and food, not given medical attention, and was repeatedly threatened with death.
But I thought Rumsfeld didn't authorize any torture...
