Apparently from what I'm reading, President Bush will do what no other man fighting for his political life has ever done- he will attempt to smear and distort his opponent's record. Yes, yes, I know. It IS highly unusual to face these sorts of attacks, but we have to adapt to the situation. Here's a tip for you:
- When Bush claims you flip-flop like a caught fish, you respond with a terse but firm rebuttal, and then quickly move on to issues Americans are worried about this year- healthcare, jobs, war and peace. If you argue with Bush over and again on his turf, you'll lose Mr. Kerry.
- Get a few ads out there in the battleground states. Make sure you sound firm and focused. Talk about a "new" vision for the country. Americans love that word.
Mr. Kerry, this is unchartered territory. These flip-flop charges are hugely bizarre. I, like most pundits, figured they wouldn't attack you at all. It is proper etiquette, you know.
If you put this into perspective, you have your hands full- certainly more so than Bill Clinton, who only had to deal with extramarital affairs allegations in his '92 run. So take care and run hard!
(PS- I must admit, sir, that perhaps the Democratic Party ought to nominate a man guaranteed not to be attacked by Republicans. John Edwards sounds good- but, oh, he's a trial lawyer and they would have a field day with that. He's also got a pretty wide legislative voting record, like you. Erstwhile candidate Howard Dean, who held up phenomenally well against attacks of being too liberal to govern, might have shielded himself from Bush too. Ahh well. The process is nearly wrapped up.)
