Please do not Rec this diary, please Rec the Mothership diary so we keep the liveblog solidly on the Rec List today.
Welcome to the BP TopKill Failure/LRMP Diary #20, a submersible (ROV) for the Top Kill Failure Liveblog Mothership: 29 May, 2010 - Day Four and a half.
We're following BP's latest efforts to pretend to continue work on the Top Kill/Junk Shot LMRP which involves cutting the riser from the BOP replacing the damaged BOP with the 2nd relief well rig BOP therefore making the 2nd relief well rig useless.
Come here to comment, ask questions, share information, cry on each other's shoulders, rant, whatever you need - come on in. Expect lots of BP hate motive questioning and maybe talk of mermaids...
For a description of the mothership/ROV liveblogging process, see this thread.
Note: Updates are at the bottom of the diary.
It bears repeating - Please DO NOT Rec this diary, Rec the Mothership here.

---Diarist Commentary and Updates---
I think that everyone knew, or strongly suspected, from pretty early on that this well was not going to be easy to shut down. Tonight we have the official admission from BP that the "topkill" won't work, and that the LMRP is next up in their bag of tricks.
My heart breaks and my psyche rages for the people and creatures of Southern Louisiana. Tonight, in a diary by FishoutofWater we are shown some new evidence that the oil, in its various forms, looks to be really, really widespread. This is the first time I've heard Texas mentioned as a casualty, though it only stands to reason that all coastlines on the Gulf will probably be affected, especially since there doesn't appear to be that much collection and burning of oil at the surface, and because we've heard today from BP COO Doug Suttles that they have no plan for cleaning up the dispersant-treated oil. He claims that the oil will break down into microscopic particles that can be ingested by organisms in the sea. However, we've seen evidence from Cousteau and other divers that it isn't all that microscopic -- it's moving around in giant plumes in layers in the Gulf.
Whether or not LMRP is really a viable solution, or whether it's a way to keep people thinking that they are doing something with good potential while they drill relief wells, I don't know. What I do know is that the people and creatures of the Gulf need more help with prevention, cleanup and recovery. Now.

Update 1 (5/30/10 01:30 eastern): The "Day Four" mothership diary has sunk (meaning it's off the rec list). Garrett has fashioned a temporary "lifeboat" mothership to take its place. Please go over and recommend that new mothership diary so we can get and keep it on the rec list.
Update 2 (5/30/10 01:48 eastern): BP has a technical briefing paper from May 25th posted on their site that provides several diagrams. The last diagram is the LMRP in different states. It's a PDF so you can use the zoom function. Warning: PDF Link http://www.bp.com/...
Update 3 (5/30/10 02:45 eastern):
Tomtech has a diary with some very nice screen captures of the various mechanical stuff at the bottom of the sea. Check it out.
