Seriously.
That's not the kindest accusation to make, but how else does one describe the Luntzian exercise in right wing pagentry going on right now?
A symbolic vote on a weak-kneed, couple-of-page "health care repeal" bill (link: http://www.politicususa.com/... ) that sounds like it was phoned in by a Washington hack in between rounds of Mai Tais at Trader Vic's?
The mandatory Reading of the Constitution before morning prayers addressing the nation's business?
(btw - if you haven't seen Lawrence O'Donnell's respectful take-down of the one of the TPGOP congresscritters on the brush your teeth, read your constitution before going to the floor nonsense, you should: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/... )
They don't want to cut the defense budget. Their big claim to deficit slashing fame is...decreasing their office budgets?
One of the more fundamentalist true believers won't sign on to Congress's health care plan, even though his own wife has a pre-existing condition and needs health care coverage? ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/... )
What's next, the TPGOP passing a Congressional dress code that includes the patriotic wearing of powdered wigs and gaiters because that's how the Founding Fathers would have made a fashion statement?
Somehow, I actually don't think this pomp and nonsense will play well with the majority of voters out there, including a good number of the people who voted for the GOP in the last election. While the TPGOP dresses up their rhetoric to levels even a political Bob Mackie* would be hard pressed to top, most Americans will sigh, voice a collective yawn and then ask our new Crier of the House:
Where are the jobs, Mr. Boehner?
Let's see if they can put down the sequin-studded talking points long enough to hear that message.
*with all apologies to Mr. Mackie for putting him in close proximity to these folks
Update: thanks for the recs!
And now, your moment of Zen...
