After their cattle were killed in a prolonged drought, a group of Maasai in the Longido District of Tanzania were left without a source of food or income. But a gift of 31 camels from Heifer Tanzania is now providing them with milk, transportation and a sustainable source of income. "With the camels we always have something," says Paulo Ole Sadida, one camel recipient. "We have something sustainable, whether the drought is here or not."
And in Mambi Village in the Mbarali District, Nicholas Mwakabele, a fish farmer who received support from Heifer Tanzania to establish a fish pond, helped his neighbor start his own pond. The neighbor had come begging for a single meal but Mwakabele wanted him to have a sustainable source of food for many meals. He told his neighbor, "when I give you a fish today you will eat it and tomorrow you will come for some more fish. Why don’t I advise you to find some other people to instruct you on how to make a fish pond and then I’ll give you some fingerlings to stock your pond and then you will be eating fish every day."
