Indeed, as Jed notes, the second Congressional tenure of Mike Fitzpatrick (R, PA-08) did not start off well, missing the whole "oath" thing to attend a fundraiser in his honor.
Because if you take the Constitution seriously, Article VI makes explicitly clear that Representatives "shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution." Which, unfortunately for him (and the Constitution), Fitzpatrick wasn't when he took to the floor of the House today to read from the founding document.
Did you catch that? In reading from the 25th Amendment regarding the role of the President pro tempore of the Senate, Fitzpatrick instead referred to the "President pro temporary." Oops.
Fond as I may be of the Philadelphia accent, that's no way to start service to the people of Pennsylvania's Eighth Congressional District -- which may be home to Sesame Place, but still expects its leaders to speak more eloquently than Cookie Monster and Elmo. If Republicans want to preach about taking the Constitution seriously, maybe they should start taking the Constitution seriously.
