I been reading a few of the blogs here about the shooting in Az and I noticed that a point is being missed here.

Some folks are confused as to whether or not Mr. Jared Lee Loughner did in fact commit a political assassination in AZ

Well the facts show he very purposefully executed an assassination.

From an eye witness to the killings:

A 19-year-old volunteer at the event, Alex Villec, described how the violence unfolded.

Villec, a former staffer for the congresswoman, told The Associated Press that the man who later turned out to be the suspect arrived at the event wearing a black cap and baggy pants and asking for the congresswoman.

"I told him ... she'll be more than happy to talk to you as your turn comes," Villec said. The man walked away, but returned just minutes later and burst through a table separating Villec and Giffords from the public. Villec said he saw him raise an arm, and then he heard gunfire.

The gunman fired at Giffords and her district director and started shooting indiscriminately at staffers and others standing in line to talk to the congresswoman, said Mark Kimball, a communications staffer for Giffords.

"He was not more than three or four feet from the congresswoman and the district director," he said, describing the scene as "just complete chaos, people screaming, crying."

We spoke to an eyewitness, Steven Rayle, who was on the scene at the time of the shooting and helped to hold the suspect down while waiting for police. Here's what he said:

The event was very informal: Giffords had set up a table outside the Safeway and about 20-30 people were gathered to talk to her. The gunman, who may have come from inside the Safeway, walked up and shot Giffords in the head first, "point blank". According to Rayle, who is a former ER doctor, Giffords was able to move her hands after being shot.

After shooting Giffords, the gunman opened fire indiscriminately for a few seconds, firing 20-30 rounds and hitting a number of people, including a kid no older than 10 years old. Rayle hid behind a concrete pole and pretended to be dead. When the gunman apparently ran out of ammunition he attempted to flee, but a member of Giffords' staff tackled him. Rayle helped hold the gunman down while waiting for the sheriff to arrive, about 15-to-20 minutes later. The EMS came about 30 minutes later. Rayle said he was "stunned" by how long it took medical help to arrive.

The gunman was young, mid-to-late 20s, white, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing and said nothing during the shooting or while being held down, although he struggled at first. He was "not particularly well-dressed"; he didn't look like a businessman, but more of a "fringe character," Rayle said. The sheriff's department arrived, arrested the gunman and cordoned off the parking lot.

CNN is reporting six killed and 12 wounded. Among the dead is a 9 year-old girl and federal judge John Roll.

Update: Meet the shooter, 22-year-old Jared Loughner.

It seems he is not a very capable person on his own.
He lives with his parents, he is a loner.
This makes it safe to conclude he was assisted in this assassination.

The fact he was caught alive is fortunate from a law enforcement perspective.

It will be very interesting to see who the helpers turn out to be.

The next few day's should be very interesting.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I have seen no evidence that she is dead, though I cannot imagine living through a shot in the head.

I am greatly saddened by this event.

A state Sen. who was by her side said the entrance wound was in her temple and the exit was in her forehead.  Also, since it was from a pistol, the bullet likely didn't do much disruption.

She'll likely be disabled, I just pray that she makes as close to a full physical recovery as possible.

  •  You assasinate your political enemy. (4+ / 0-)

You don't then randomly gun down another eighteen or so innocent people, including a nine-year-old.

The gunman was a violent nut.  Just like the other gunmen in all the other mass murders in this country.  Don't make this atrocity anything more than it is.

He may have specifically wanted to kill the Congresswoman, but what did he possibly have against the other 17 people he shot at and wounded and killed?  He probably attended the event with murder on his mind, but apparently with no escape plans.  There I have to agree, it was not a rational plan.

        •  once he killed the congresswoman (0+ / 0-)

he would of course continue killing until it became impossible to kill any more.

He wants to be noticed after all, doesn't he?

but the primary target was the congresswoman.

I am very interested in who helped him

That could become a huge issue, very big

I've read that 'someone' said he showed up with 'another man' and there are pictures of some man wandering the aisles of Safeway.  Wandering the aisles, and wearing jeans and a jean jacket, of a Safeway are cause for suspicion?

The circumstances of this incident point to a mass murder by a crazy, violent person, not a political assassination.  The congresswoman may have been the focus, but the know circumstances suggest just another nutjob mass killing.

Hate radio talks all the time about taking them all out, get a hunting license for liberals, etc. The assassin went immediately for Giffords - shot her first after asking which one she was.....

A purse and simple assassination attempt and an assassination of liberals associated with her.

          •  Collateral damage then? (0+ / 0-)

The other eighteen people shot randomly were just part of the political assassination?  A child.

Fail.  Faulty logic. If it makes you feel better, okay.  But the known facts say otherwise.

(CNN) -- The suspect in the weekend massacre in Arizona scrawled "my assassination" and "I planned ahead" on an envelope found in his home, according to court documents released Sunday.

He was happy assassinating Gifford's staff and supporters - self-admmited.

The entire event was an assassination plot and you write about random killings? Looking for your response.

and I wonder with his past involvement with the police how that was possible?  A simple look at his Face Book writings would or should alert a gun seller to suspect he/she might want to do a back ground check.  At this point, there are so many questions and so few answers that it is only conjecture as to his motive, but it is a sorry sorry situation.

However this does remind me of the Columbine shootings and how surprised and devastated the parents of the boys were to discover what a room with a door closed in their own homes contained.  No way am I blaming the parents, but Do Not Enter signs on children's doors have no place in today's society.

I was in a grocery store north of the Safeway where Congressmen Giffords was shot yesterday around 11:30 AM.  I looked up at a TV mounted in the deli.  The location looked familiar to me with the word "shooting" in a  text banner at the bottom of the screen.  I moved closer and heard the news in shocked disbelief. My first thought was how easy it is for anyone to  carry a gun here.  I muttered, "This is what happens when we make it so easy to carry guns. It makes me feel so much safer."  The lady standing next to me responded,"I think I'll go get one."  That's Arizona.

The last election here was full of vitriol, much of it funded by out-of-State interests.  Everywhere you went, you could see ugly white signs that said things like "Gabby cut your Medicare".  Giffords campaign started out so positive, she even had local Republicans doing ads for her.  She has a great reputation here as a hard worker but almost lost to a Republican/Tea Party candidate with no experience and very extreme views.  I believe that happened because of the outside money and the tea party outrage drummed up here.

I spent yesterday surfing news sources; local, national, Internet.  Yes, the shooter had obvious mental problems.  But as our sheriff said, extreme rhetoric on radio & TV can have consequences.  This AM I saw a picture of a second person of interest, an older man. If this is true, perhaps Jared was used by others.  I know we don't know all the facts yet.  I do want to say, however, that hatred was drummed up against Giffords, that can not be ignored.

I just wish the media would stop with the false equivalencies. When liberals pointed out the lies of Bush & Cheney, they used information, not ammunition.
