If the Supreme Court, in it's current configuration, won't assist the homophobes on the right, I'm wildly optimistic. They refused to hear Bishop Harry Jackson's appeal of the District of Columbia's Board of Elections and Ethics ruling against putting an initiative on the ballot that defines marriage as being between one man and one woman.

Perhaps wild optimism is misplaced, but after years of shaking my head and expecting this Civil Rights battle to outlive me, there are so many really radical changes in how the rights of GLBT people are viewed that I can see legal, moral, ethical, and sociological change as a done deal during my life.
I don't expect that the fringe elements will change their stance, but I do expect that people who have allowed themselves to be dragged into theological battles that have no real theological basis will begin to see the light. It was amazing to see that the framing changed from "gays wanna get married!" to "gays want civil rights". That's a sea change, and it happened within a few weeks. Once the fear-mongers lose their hold on the framing, they've lost the battle.
It was infuriating to have all the losses so soon after we saw so many gains, it's infuriating to think that Iowa Supreme Court justices need protection against the bigots and haters, it's still shocking to realize that Prop 8 actually passed, but reading this headline today filled me with hope.
Brothers and sisters, the times they are achanging, let's celebrate every victory!
