I'm Not Buying This For A Dollar.
With his league facing a work stoppage in a manner of a few months, the commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, is saying publically that he will reduce his pay to $1.
From ESPN and the Associated Press:
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will cut his salary to $1 if there is a work stoppage after the collective bargaining agreement expires in March.
<snip>
Goodell also has asked the league's compensation committee to delay any bonus payments to him until after a deal is reached with the NFL Players Association.
"Let me emphasize that we are fully committed to doing everything possible to reach a new collective bargaining agreement without any disruption to our business," Goodell said. "The entire senior leadership team stands with me in its commitment to resolving the CBA issues with the player's union.
"While several other executives have also volunteered to make additional reductions to their compensation, I have asked them not to take that step at this time as we continue our negotiating efforts."
This sounds great; like the commissioner is with the working people, and that he doesn’t want to take a salary while the league is out of commission, if it happens to go out of commission.
That is, until you get to the matter of how much he actually makes:
Goodell, who makes about $10 million a year including bonuses, said in a memo to his staff Wednesday that chief negotiator Jeff Pash will do the same. Pash makes nearly $5 million a year. (ESPN/Associated Press, 2011)
$10 million? You mean to tell me he’s talking about a pay cut to $1 a year, after making $10 million? That means nothing to me, as a football fan. He can afford (to say he’s going to) take a pay cut, because he has money in the bank, and he knows damn well that league isn’t going to miss that many games, if any at all, during a projected work stoppage. In my view, this is a stunt, designed to gain the support of the public, perhaps to the ownership view.
I’m just not impressed by it. Once this stoppage ends, he’ll go back to collecting short of $1 million per month, and will recoup whatever pay he “lost”.
So what, Commissioner Goodell? Nobody cares if you take $1 for the year. You just better not lose the entire season of football. That’s the foremost concern the fans have, not how much you’re getting paid to make sure that happens.
Stop fronting; do your job, and make sure there’s some football next season.
Or we’ll be waiting all day for movie night in the Fall.
