I realized this morning that since there will be no diary Friday night due to the DK4 transition and if all goes well in said transition that the first Rachel Maddow Show diary will be on Monday...Valentine's Day. Ain't that just sweeter than a sack of sugar?!
On this date in 1950, Senator Joe McCarthy made his infamous "I hold in my hand the names of 200 Communists in the State Department" speech in West Virginia. One would THINK after 50 years or so that we might have learned something from all that $hit, but some "people" would just love to rehash those days.
Ugh...quickly moving on to another item, Gabby Hayes died on this date in 1969. It was not THIS guy, boys & girls. ;D
You know me - anything to let me show a Mel Brooks clip!
Let's get SPARKy! "Cool Hand Luke" should've gone to Davenport, IA to do his dirty deed. But, then again, we might not have had all that fun with Strother Martin! :D I think all beer looks & smells like horse pee, so I WILL NOT be partaking in this stuff! Seriously, what is the appeal of beer? I've supposedly had "good stuff," but it still seemed like horse pee to me. Finally, in the "Mama said there would be days like this" category... Neither David Jansen nor Harrison Ford could be reached for comment - HA!
On with The Rachel Maddow Show!
"Hang in There!" - 3 high - powered GOBPers invaded the White House for lunch today. Were there food tasters around? Speaker Sobbin' Small Price to Pay Goldilocks sounded nearly diplomatic; Rachel said the "no compromise guys" have smacked themselves down. ;D Most of the GOBP promises made have gone about as well as the WMD claims in Iraq. There's Rep. Mike Pence talking about "moral battles" over jobs; again, I am so damn glad he's not my Rep! BUT, he might run for Governor, so I got that goin' for me. *&^%$#@! The GOBP is ready to raise taxes on health insurance policies that include coverages for abortions. Well, ain't that special?!
Bat$hit Bachmann & Rep. {insert retching noise here} Alan West voted to extend the Patriot Act; I guess that shows where they are in the illustration in last night's show! Rep. Todd Rokita's not my Rep, either. ;D Mine is Andre' Carson, but I'm not thrilled with his tax cut extension vote AT ALL. Michael Steele is back! Wow, he's becoming quite the "librul regular!" Rachel's show? Bill Maher's place? TDS?! YIKES! There's a difference between campaigning & governoring? Huh...go figure... The GOBP "leaders" in the House need a visit from the Sesame Street "Count" for help with their numbers! HA! :D Wow, Mr. Steele actually used the term "war on terror"; I didn't think that was supposed to be on the talking points memo anymore.
"The Interview" - There's Senator Richard Lugar - one of mine, baby! It would appear the GOBP might not be of 1 mind about our efforts in Afghanistan. Rep. Duncan had the gall to use the term "waste, fraud, and abuse" when it comes to our 2 wars when he probably was one of the biggest cheerleaders for said wars & probably voted for every single stinkin' "emergency spending bill" for it??!!
Rep. Nancy Pelosi didn't think the war in Afghanistan would become a "party thing." OOPS! And, Mr. Steele is back. Ya' know, GWB didn't have "...a clear sense of purpose..." in Afghanistan, either, but not too many GOBPers had a problem with that. Wow, Rachel & Mr. Steele are being downright civil! YIKES! ;D
"Update No Trespassing" - We get to hear about those brave WY GOBP state legislators again! :D The show from last night got a big 'ol positive response today. A Dem Rep. today joined her colleagues. And, she quoted one of the Reps from last night! Rep. Shepperson is gonna be a Mommy! The updated anti - abortion bill did pass, but much of the truly oogy stuff is gone.
"Egypt Update" - Protest efforts are growing all over Egypt - not just in Cairo; some are pretty violent or at least look really not fun. OK, Egypt's VP (aka CIA rendition partner) said that unless the protestors begin to shape up, there will be "...the dark bats emerging to terrorize the people..." Huh, maybe he'd just seen Batman Begins before he said that or something. ;D People are thinking things are going to get violent sooner rather than later. Richard Engel's reporting again & seemingly still in 1 piece! :D Strikes are going on all over the country, and it's not like Egypt has a whole lot of fall back means. Activity around the Suez area is on the uptake, too, which is making plenty of people nervous! Huh...the VP dude was trying to be poetic? I wonder if he knows the "There once was a man from Nantucket" shtick?
There is active messaging going on about where people should be on Friday. Richard thinks the time for a crackdown might - just might - be passed; let's hope so!
"Shortest Scandal Ever" - A married GOBP Congress critter was caught trying to find "a lady friend" on Craigslist - Rep. Chris Lee. He's already resigned?! $HIT! Where's the fun in that??!!
Senator John Ensign is holding a re - election fund raiser tonight. How 'bout a fund raiser to pay back Mom & Dad?!
"Moment of Geek" - There's Scott Kelly holding a mic while a colleague plays the flute! Now, let's have $aint $arah from Wasilla try THAT!! There's been flutes in space before; there's also been saxophones, too. And, yes, Rachel, the term is "flout - est." :D And, Rachel, I'm a musician, and you've got plenty of fans who are musicians; we could've told you Scott Kelly was miccing the correct end of the flute! :D Well, since we ended with flutes...
