Welcome to Velocipede Vanguard. A group devoted bicycling and bicycles of all kinds. I think we should be open to new things so I'd like Velocipede Vanguard to be open to users with electric assist motors on peddle powered bikes as well.

I'm just learning my way around our new digs, and I'm sure you are too, so I hope you bear with me, and I'll try to do the same for you. I've upgraded all the members to the status of editor, allowing everyone to publish group diaries. I do think we'll need some lose guidelines for our group diaries.

Proposed rules for posting group diaries

Velocipede Vanguard is primarily focused on Bicycling and Bicycles, so group diaries  should share that focus. If you have a piece about, for example about green transportation that discusses building more bike lanes and bike paths, but the bulk of it discusses other forms of green transportation this wouldn't be the appropriate venue for it.

Everyone should get the opportunity to have their work highlighted. If someone else has recently posted a group diary, please delay publishing yours for at least least three hours. You can set up a timed release for your group diaries to allow for the three hour interval.

I welcome everyone's suggestions and participation. I think this is going to be a fun group, and I'm looking forward to it.

You must add at least one tag to this diary before publishing it.

Add keywords that describe this diary. Separate multiple keywords with commas.
Tagging tips - Search For Tags - Browse For Tags

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

It is going to be a grim ride home in the Bay Area today, but I've got my bright yellow suit, so I'll be fine.

Any plans on having specific themes, e.g. bike maintenance?

exciting.  Sunny out the door then hail(Hail!? in Oakland?) four blocks later, then rain then no rain, sunny the whole time.  Surreal.

I refuse to represent my political beliefs using numbers. It isn't accurate, nor is it helpful. But I'm around a -10 on both scales.

      •  I actually left the bike at home today. (0+ / 0-)

Haven't had time to put new brake pads on, and my 235 lb ass almost can't stop too effectively in the rain.

Really weird weather lately.  Glad for the rain, but could do without the wind. I came around a corner onto Mission on Tuesday and almost got knocked over.

First and most alarmingly my operating system crashed when the original version of this diary was on a preview page and I was composing a tip jar when the  Win 7 OS crashed and the screen went BLACK taking the finished diary with it, and  the group Avatar got wiped.

Then on my attempt to compose a first comment after having rewritten the diary from scratch and successfully posting it (I didn't dare pre-post a tip jar this time) my bower crashed taking the comment and embedded links into the D-K 4 netherworld with it.

I hope no one else is having th.ese problems.

All 2,200 rider slots. Probably because a large portion of  this years week ride route  follows the gorgeous Oregon Coast. They'll be riding some of the same stretches of Highway 101 that I rode on my tour down the coast last September.

I did their week ride back in 2008. We circled the Wallowa Mountains in northeastern Oregon. They only had 1,400 riders on that one. Here's a link to the pdf map of day 5 in the mountains.

I'd love to do that someday.  A few years ago I was driving with my brother-in-law from Crescent City north through Gold Beach and the wind was so strong we passed a cyclist trying to go across a bridge, and pedaling as hard as he could and not making any forward progress.  It was funny, but I was still envious and would love to revisit all my happy growing up places on the Oregon Coast on my bike.

I stopped riding to work when the snow started to fly in November and just started back this week! I am DELIGHTED to be riding to work again. I rode all year here when I was much younger, but really don't like biking when the temp is in the 20's or lower. It feels so good to be back on the bike, but my butt is rather sore. Oh well.

I'm a very lucky American.  I can walk or ride to my place of work.

The snow is almost gone and it may time to get back on the bike.

We Americans need to realize how good a bike can be for moving around the places we live.

No brainer, really - bringing together Portland's two great passions, bikes and street food!

"With a vision for 35 carts featuring bike repairs, air-pumping, and gear—not to mention good food drawing from 82nd Avenue’s wealth of Asian, Latino and Russian communities—[Portland developer Roger] Goldingay hopes to take the cart village concept to the next level.

... Goldingay looks around and sees nothing but potential here: access to a popular, scenic bike trail, and one of busiest streets in the city."

"On the outer east side, there’s nothing like central Portland’s food cart movement, certainly nothing like what we’re going to do. I see families riding through on bikes. Maybe a farmers market. We’re close to Happy Valley, East Portland, the north side of Oregon City, Clackamas, Gresham, and Milwaukie. I hope to serve this population, but I’d like to think I’m doing something to improve the area, too, to make it safe and family-friendly— but also a destination location that will draw urban dwellers to an area they know little about."

Yeah, something like this out there would be great.  I live in a close-in SE Portland neighborhood now, but when I was way out past 82nd a few years ago I would have loved this!

I'll have to head out there and do a photo diary when things get underway, these projects get up quickly.
