I pray to God that a catastrophe like 9/11 or like Hurricane Katrina never happens to our Country again, but I bring this up to make a very important point.
In times of crisis, Americans come together. Politicians stop their bickering and actually get something done! Today America is still in a crisis, albeit an economic one, but a crisis none the less.
When 9/11 happened the politicians didn't think twice about spending money to build up New York and the Pentagon from the rubble. Our leaders in Washington didn't blink an eye to borrow billions to re-build our cities even though we were in debt back then.
While America is not facing a physical crisis like 9/11 or Katrina today, many millions of our fellow Americans are facing an economic crisis. A crisis that they did not bring upon themselves. They lost their jobs, some after over 20 years of working.
With a new congress here in 2011, the conservatives are in control. They are looking for ways to cut the deficit and national debt. The problem is, Americans are still in a crisis. Jobs are scarce and people are running out of unemployment and other sources of help.
My question to these conservatives is, What happens, God forbid, another 9/11 or Katrina occurs tomorrow?
Will these same conservatives say we don't have the money to help re-build? Will the deficit matter then?
Will they borrow money and add to the deficit during THAT crisis?
I hope we never have to find out, but it would make the conservatives hypocritical if they added a nickel to the debt because of a physical catastrophe, but not for this economic one.
Stop balancing the budget off the backs of the poor and working families of this Great Country.
