The cold weather (-21 wind-chills) didn't appear to stop hundreds of people from coming out to show solidarity with the workers of Wisconsin who are fighting to keep their rights in the face of a Republican governor and lawmakers who want to take them away.
There was a strong passion and feeling of unity among the 150-200 people who braved the frigid temperatures outside the downtown Fargo (North Dakota) post office. People marched and chanted with signs and posters supporting workers rights and the plight of the poor and middle class v.s. the interests of rich corporations and the politicians who support them.
Many were protesting policies that favor cutting taxes for the rich while cutting benefits and wages for hard-working Americans. It was a rally for freedom from oppressive policies that only make the rich richer and the poor poorer!
Here's a link to some video from today's rally in downtown Fargo, ND:
Many people voiced the concern that if we don't stand up now there won't be any rights to stand up for later.
There was a definite sense of urgency - that now is the time to stand - that we can't back down - that we can't let our rights and standard of living be eroded any more by politicians only concerned about serving rich corporate interests!
Many local union members and leaders in attendance were joined by an equal number of non-union citizens and workers who realize that what is happening in Wisconsin and other Republican-dominated states is dangerous and destructive to the lower and middle classes of this country.
This wasn't just a demonstration for union rights, it was a demonstration for civil rights!
Every local news station was present with their cameras running. Several interviews were conducted during the course of the rally. It will be interesting to see how they spin the event, but the reporters and camera crews seemed very supportive and excited about the historic and moving event they were witnessing.
I went away from today's rally proud that apathy, at least on this day, was being defeated! I hope we can sustain the spirit of today. Let's keep the fire burning and hold onto our rights!
