Today we traveled to Lansing, the state capital of Michigan, to express solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Wisconsin.
The last time I protested in Lansing was in the run-up to the illegal and criminal invasion of Iraq. The mood at that time, though defiant, was one of powerlessness. Though a million people protested, many of us knew that the invasion would take place regardless. We had seen this movie before and we knew how it ended.
Today was different. There was a belief in this crowd that the outcome would be controlled by the people rather than the politicians. There was a feeling of true solidarity. Represntatives of many unions, both public and private were represented. The comment I heard from everyone I spoke with was "It's about time".

The flag is a Polish flag, alluding to the Polish trade union Solidarity.
Another reference to the Polish Solidarity trade union.

The Democratic Mayor of Lansing, Virg Bernero, made an appearance.
The Mayor gave an rousing speech. The day, however, belonged not to the politicians, but to the people.
Perhaps we have awoken from our 30 year lethargy.
