I swear I'll go medieval on his sorry hide. Well, why not? He's the one asking me to work in medieval conditions. Slight hyperbole aside, theres one thing to remember. Every single time a sector of the workforce has unionized and compelled the management to recognize the union, working and living conditions for all workers in that sector and their families have improved. The corollary is also true. Every time a union has been successfully broken or de-recognized by management working and living conditions for everybody in that unions trade got worse.
So folks come along and try to say "we dont need the unions any more" and its a LIE. Ask any woman whats happened to womens rights since the womens organizations started losing members as a generation of women grew up without any memory of that struggle. Ask any african-american if its ok, now that everybody is equal before the law, to disband all the civil-rights groups. Hell, ask any american who happens to prefer to make his devotions in a mosque instead of a megachurch. Yes, we need unions. Now more than ever. You see, the thing about rights is that you use them or lose them - which is exactly what the folks who didnt want you to have them in the first place are counting on.
