I posted a diary on Sunday hoping to call attention to the OC Hate Video, video published by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) that shows the vicious verbal attacks on Muslim families attending a fundraiser in Yorba Linda, California.
I'd like to show you that video right now -- but you'll have to come over to my house. I still have the YouTube window open on my computer; I can still play the tape. But if you go to the video I posted, which was published by CAIR, you'll see this:
This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by George Collins.
Who? Collins is a former Republican candidate for Santa Ana Mayor and for School Board.
Collins is, evidently, the one who took the video of the protesters. That gives him commercial rights over the video. But there are exceptions to copyright law. Copyright law is not intended to facilitate suppression of news.
You can see, by the way, Villa Park Councilwoman Debra Pauly's tirade here. You'll need to click; embedding has been disabled. ICNA has the original video here.
I don't know whether Collins actually took the footage in the video (and, what, sent it to CAIR?) I do know that there are fair use exceptions for this sort of thing. In the past, Daily Kos has captured suppressed videos where Markos and Jed think that they have a legitimate right to do so. I'd like to see that happen here.
If anyone can tell me how to download the CAIR video that's still on my open window, I'd like to make sure that it gets preserved.
Preventing the suppression of this sort of scene of hatred is critical -- but it doesn't happen by itself. People have to go out and do it. I hope that others will join me in trying to ensure that this video is retained until the copyright claim can be, presumably, defeated. It should not be suppressed. Markos can do it, I can do it (if I can get instructions), anyone who can get access to the original can do it.
But the screaming bigots in that video did the deed and they should now endure the shame of it.
