Greetings!
Many women around the world gathered yesterday in honor of the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. In Egypt, women held a "million women march" in Tahir to protest their near-exclusion from the new government that is forming. International Women's Day serves as a reminder of the struggles and accomplishments that millions of women around the world have experienced. Women have consistently played an active role in moving forward a vision for human rights and will continue to do so demanding change for a better world for all. The stories of struggle remind us though that there is still a lot of work to be done.
In our featured article about US military intervention in Libya by WPC Advisory Council member Phyllis Bennis, she reminds us that the "democratic revolutionary processes sweeping North Africa and the Middle East have already transformed that long-stalemated region. The peoples of the region are looking for less, not greater militarization of their countries. It is time for U.S. policy to recognize that reality." Women will be crucial to providing alternatives and solutions to create the world we want - a world free of injustice, a world where everyone can live freely and in harmony. Libya, North Africa, the Middle East, and Wisconsin are all examples of that struggle; it will be up to all us to join together and offer the vision that is desperately needed for a new world order.
