As expected, the Wisconsin state Assembly has passed legislation stripping public workers of their right to collectively bargain with their employer. The bill now goes to Scott Walker's desk. Welcome to Fitzwalkerstan.
Recalls are not really in play for the state Assembly: a recall drive can't start until a year after the last election, every member of the Assembly is elected every two years, and the recall process can take up to 6 months. As such, it's best to wait until November 2012 when turnout for the Presidential campaign would give Democrats a better chance of retaking the chamber. Democrats need a net gain of at least ten seats to overcome the current 57-38-1 Republican majority. (There are currently three vacancies.)
Retaking the Wisconsin state Assembly is a necessary step to eventually repealing this bill and restoring workers' rights. However, it will also be the last step in the process. By contrast, we can immediately boot some of Republican state Senators who are eligible for recall.
You guys have been amazing on this--we are almost at 12,500 Kossacks donating to the fight in Wisconsin! Still, with Wisconsin Republicans getting huge reward checks from lobbyists in DC, we must keep digging. Please, continue to support the recall effort by contributing $5 to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Democratic state Senate committee.
