I seldom turn on the news these days; I don't have cable and the mainstream networks continue to practice stenography of villager/GOP talking points too often for me to stomach. BUT... when I do turn on the box, Public Broadcasting continues to run shows that inform and entertain without becoming nothing but entertainment.
Case in point: Need To Know. With an hour to work with, and a weekly schedule, NTK doesn't have to boil news down to soundbites and eye candy sandwiched between commercials. I just happened to turn it on a few minutes ago, and have already seen stories that never make it onto the nightly news. This will be a quick heads up for those who don't see this show on their local PBS station (while we still have them anyway...) I've a few links below the jump for those who want more.
Need To Know has a presence on the web; you can go to the link to see what you've missed and get more information or comment on stories. Here's a link to the show I'm currently watching.
Want to see a discussion about whether or not unions are really bankrupting the states? What the state governors turning down Federal money for trains are giving up? How about a discussion on inequality in America? Or why we may be transfusing too much blood in hospitals for less benefit than we thought? Ever heard about the Tiny House movement?
There's a mix of daily stories and blogging as well. Did you know there's a billionaire complaining that public sector workers are "a privileged new class"? Did you know the largest U.S. military base in the Asia-Pacific sector is not only dealing with earthquakes and tsunamis, but a lot of local resentment?
Need To Know is something more people need to know about. Check it out - and you might think about doing something for PBS while you're at it. Support your local public radio and TV stations too - Republicans think America doesn't need to know anything, but we know better.
