Michigan is currently one of the few states that does not allow citizens (with the exception of police officers, and some others), to carry Tasers for self defense. There are currently a couple of bills making their way through the Michigan Senate, SB0029 and SB0030 that would at least allows holders of a Concealed Pistol License to own a Taser. If you live in Michigan, I encourage you to contact your state senator and ask them to support these bills.
I'm not entirely sure how this suggestion will be received here, so let me answer a couple complaints that could be raised.
1. Probably the most common complaint about Tasers is that, because they are perceived as safe, people use them far more readily than they should. But this is really only a complaint that applies to police use of Tasers - something already legal in Michigan. Taser cartridges are one-time-use and $25 a piece - Joe Schmoe civilian, who has to pay for this out of his pocket, is not going to go around zapping people for fun.
2. The other big complaint is that Tasers are in fact not as safe as we are led to believe. I'm not going to try to convince you that they are 100% safe - but I think the evidence makes it clear that they are quite safe, that you are probably more likely to kill someone by hitting them on the back of the head with a Taser than by shooting them with it. And more to the point - guns and pocket knives are certainly legal in Michigan, and both are more dangerous weapons than Tasers. In fact, perhaps if Tasers were legal, we would see fewer people walking around with the more harmful defensive options.
