With the media focusing so intensely on the goings-on of Republican administrations and state legislatures from the Mid-west eastward it's not surprising that they are ignoring the politics of the Intermountain West. I mean come on, the govenor of Michigan is the state into a fascist government; but here in Utah, that's just politics as usual. Granted our high-minded legislature hasn't yet thought of a way to completely taking over municiple government but that doesn't mean they haven't tried. Actually, many things that the shit our illustious state legislature has pulled for the 20 years I've lived here is what the teabaggers are gung-ho about. If you go thru the teabagger checklist, Utah has "been there, done that". For example, allowing people to carry guns into every building in the state, with the exception of federal buildings and elementary schools; or doing everything in its power to funnel money away from public schools. And let's not forget one of the country's most backward liqior laws.
Utah is a "Conservative" Republican's wetdream, assuming they admit to having wetdreams. This state is quite possibly the reddest state in Union and looks like it going to get redder. In a article from the Deseret News, by way of the NYT, there is an article about the big three in Utah Republican politics, Hatch, Romney and Huntsman. However, this isn't an article about praise about but an article about how their days might be numbered. Like some of you may know, in Utah Mormon equals Republican and sadly this is not a genarlization. That's the way of Utah politics. Yes, we do have a Democratic representative but more often than not he's been more Republican than our last govenor, ironically Jon Huntsman, Jr.. In Utah politics, the more to the Right you are, the more loved you are. Which is why it's no surprise the teabaggers feel so at home here and which is why former Sen. Bob Bennett is a former senator. During the primaries, he was labelled a "Liberal" because he dared to work with his Democrats, yet alone look in their direction and now Sen. Hatch, Gov. Romney and Amb. Huntsman are in the sights of the teabaggers. A few short years ago all three held up as what good and responsible Mormon Republicans and as the article explains that image is diminishing quickly. To the new teabagger influenced Utah Republican standard, they are just an angel-hairs breath from being no good dirty society-ruining Liberals. In my opinion, this aricle lays it out fairly clearly the attitudes of the average Utah voter. My favorite line from article:
"My mother says, 'If he's a bishop, he must be a good Republican,'" said Susan Southwick, state coordinator for a group called Utah Patriots. "I say, 'Do your homework.'"
Happy reading...
