Constitutionally, it is indisputable that Congress must be consulted prior to an act of war unless there is an imminent threat against this country. The president has not done so. Our country has no business enmeshing itself in another country’s civil unrest. We were not attacked. Our national security interests are not at stake. It is the American people, through their elected representatives, who are constitutionally empowered to take this kind of action. Not the president.
So I ask, why has President Obama initiated another US military intervention and why is the US and NATO really in Libya?
Former Reagan Administration official Paul Craig Roberts thinks the situation with Gaddafi is much different than the other recent protests in the Arab world. "Why is NATO there?" has become to real question, says Roberts, who fears that risky involvement stemming from American influence could lead to catastrophic breaking point.
If you are to believe that we are there for humanitarian reasons as President Obama states, then why are we not in Bahrain? Proof of the hypocrisy is that the US has ordered the media to be silent of the killings and injustices taking place in Bahrain.
President of Bahrain's Center for Human Rights Nabeel Rajab says the US media have been ordered not to cover news on the government's brutal crackdown on Bahraini people.
Reports from the Center's colleagues in the United States say “In the US some news agencies and TV stations were asked not to report on Bahrain and not to embarrass [President Barack Obama's administration,” Rajab told Press TV.
He went on to say that the US and the Western governments have chosen to keep silent over ongoing atrocities in Bahrain due to their support for the country's authoritarian regime.
According to unconfirmed reports, over 420 people have been arrested during ongoing protests in the kingdom, Rajab pointed out.
The Bahraini protesters continue to demand the ouster of the 200-year-old-plus monarchy as well as constitutional reforms.
At least 25 people have been killed and about 1,000 others injured during the government-sanctioned crackdowns on peaceful demonstrators.
Joined recently by police units and troops from Saudi and the United Arab Emirates, the Bahraini government forces have launched a deadly crackdown on the popular revolution that began to sweep the Persian Gulf island on February 14.
To add insult to all of these hypocrisies from our administration is where is the antiwar movement while all of these unconstitutional wars continue in Libya, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Yemen?
I just hope there will be more antiwar rallies like this one going on today and tomorrow in San Francisco and New York.
