(This is a re-post of a diary I wrote back in 2007)
It's Passover. For a good introduction to Passover see wiscmass' lovely diary We were slaves, and, in some ways, we still are. One popular part of Passover is songs. And one of the popular songs is Dayenu, which is Hebrew for "Enough for us". The idea of the song is that even if God had done far less than He did, it would have been enough for us.
I have another take on it. A progressive take. Below the fold.
Elders of Zion is a general Jewish interest group, open to anyone who wants to learn about Jews and Judaism. The group was created in order to facilitate such a space. Discussion of and questions about Jewish religion, ethnicity, history, culture, language, cuisine, music, literature, and identity are encouraged. Please keep this purpose in mind when commenting in our diaries. Antisemitism, diary hijacking, and I/P pie fights will not be tolerated and will be troll rated. For more information, see the inaugural diary.
Dayenu? Enough for us? I have enough, and more than enough.
It's them we have to worry about.
The poor, the starving, the victimized, the enslaved. Them
REPUBLICANS worry about NU and having DAI for NU (enough for US - the head of Exxon hasn't got enough! Tax cut!)
DEMOCRATS worry about DAI for CHEM (enough for them).
Or, to use my favorite quote once again:
Most men worry about their own bellies, and other people's souls, when we all ought to be worried abut our own souls, and other people's bellies
Rabbi Israel Salanter 1810-1883
We progressives, of any faith, or no faith, must worry about them. Nearly everyone who reads this has enough, and more than enough (I know there are some here who truly do not). I (and most of us) have food, shelter, clothing. I and most of us, do not worry about not having a next meal, or being sold into slavery, or having to sell our children to survive.
They do. The others. The truly poor.
Dayenu? Certainly.
Dayechem needs work.
Have a good Passover.
Reminder: Elders of Zion is an open space for discussing and learning about all things Jewish. This group is not the place for whatever I/P pie fight you want to start. It is not a group about Zionism or anti-Zionism. If you want to talk acrimoniously about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, regardless of the target of your anger, there are other diaries more suited to your preference. Antisemitism, diary hijacking, and pie fights are out of line with our group's mission and will be troll rated.
