The PCCC released the following statement on the President's budget speech:
"Americans will be very glad to hear that the President supports raising taxes on the rich. But he needs to back up his defense of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security with action and take benefit cuts completely off the table. The overwhelming majority of Americans oppose cuts to these programs, but support taxing the rich, ending corporate welfare, and reducing military spending. That, plus investment in jobs, should be the Democratic plan."
After corporations have looted our nation, cutting benefits for our grandparents, the disabled, and kids who need to see a doctor will not be stood for.
That's why in just one day, over 97,000 Obama-2008 supporters pledged to withhold donations and volunteering from Obama if the president cuts Medicare/Medicaid benefits. This includes over 27,000 volunteers who gave 1.3 million volunteer hours in 2008 and over 45,000 donors who gave $8.3 million to Obama in 2008.
President Obama needs to know we draw the line on any benefit cuts to these essential programs -- and so should he. Sign our pledge today, and pass it on to friends.
