Barred Owl report. Seattle
Last I reported, the female Barred Owl was making impatient noises from the nest as she waited for her partner to bring her some food. He didn't show up that day, but he's around.
What you don't see is the Douglas Squirrel scolding from a safe place in the underbrush. The owl heard. And saw. He went into alert mode, hunkered up and launched himself out of sight down towards the scolding.
Silence.
I waited for a good long time, until the owl flew back up into the tree, empty beaked. From a tangle of shrubbery next to an old Doug Fir tree the scolding began again, a sharp whistled "Pew pew pew!". Owl watched, cocked his head back and forth, waited some more.
"Pew.Pew.Pew!"
Owl went into alert mode, ruffed himself up onto his toes, brought his shoulders up as if ready to pounce again.
Silence.
Owl relaxed.
"Pew.Pew.Pew! Pew.Pew.Pew!" Squirrel scrabbled around the tree trunk, leap into some nearby hazlenut branches and disappeared out of the view of the both of us.
Owl looked towards the place where the squirrel had been. Looked at me. Looked around behind him. Fluffed himself. Closed his eyes.
