We Are Washington organized a four day 50 mile walk from Auburn to Olympia Washington "in response to draconian cuts in health care, disability, life line, housing, public safety, education, and funds to protect the environment".
A dozen protesters walked the fifty miles to ask their state legislators a simple question:
Do you support continued tax breaks for corporations, or do you support raising revenue that supports the basic needs of our communities? .
The story was reported in the Seattle PI and photos of the protest made the front page of the Olympian.
We joined the marchers on Monday morning (who are wearing the orange vests) outside the downtown Olympia Bank of America. Here is a video of what happened next.
Jeff Johnson, president of the Washington State Labor Council, explained why the Bank of America deserved a protest visit.
Robbie Stern speaks eloquently about the impact of budget cuts on seniors.
The protest moved to the Capitol Building where the following videos were taken.
The protesters then met with a state representative and then sat in the Senate Gallery before joining with local spiritual leaders in advocating for moral responses to the budget crisis.
These twelve beautiful people are turning heads and making a statement of commitment that could serve as a blueprint for social activism across America. It is time to get serious. It is time to tell the power brokers in our government that corporate greed needs to be cut, not social services.
