"What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is going on here?"
--Slim Pickens, Blazing Saddles
Honestly, it's a little surprising to me that nobody's done this yet—but I did my due diligence, ran a group search for "sports," and it came up empty, so here you have it: Daily Kos's "official" sports talk group.
The Wide World of Sports is a group for Kossacks who want to talk about sports. Any sports. All sports. Baseball, hockey, football, caber tossing, wife-carrying, curling, hurling, pulling airplanes. At any level: Professional, college, Olympic, high school, Pop Warner, Little League.
Politics and sports go hand in hand as the two things Americans love to argue about most... and I think it's 50-50 which arguments tend to get more heated.
Sports bring people together and get them talking; people on this site who agree 100% on every matter of policy and politics will get in a heated debate about whether Yankees fans actually have souls or about the relative merits of their football teams, and sometimes the only conversations we can have with our conservative friends or relatives are about the local football or baseball team.
This will be the home for all kinds of sports conversations, like...
--What's happening day to day in our favorite sports (like the Blackhawks' thorough drubbing of the Canucks last night)
--The business of sports (like the potential NFL and NBA lockouts)
--The politics of sports (like the crazy-ass wacky birther things Luke Scott said that one time)
And really pretty much everything else sports-related...
Progressive political angles on all of these things are of course welcome, but not required; if you just want to talk about sports, then just talk about sports. Getting pissed off at your local team blowing another game is a good way to unwind after a long day of getting pissed off at Republicans for ruining the country :-)
Please shoot me a DailyKos message or leave a comment if you'd like to write for us or putter around the site looking for material to republish to the group; if you're willing to take on extra duties as an editor, please also let me know. But if you're a sports fan and love talking sports, please follow the group!
Play ball!
