Some good news today, as President Obama took advantage of a statement yesterday made by the Republican speaker of the House that he was open to repealing tax breaks given to oil companies.
The White House sent a letter from Obama to both Democratic and Republican members of congress today, imploring them to "eliminate unwarranted tax breaks to the oil and gas industry and invest that revenue into clean energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oilâ.
He admits, and I hope that we all agree, that there is no silver bullet, but
I was heartened that Speaker Boehner yesterday expressed openness to eliminating these tax subsidies for the oil and gas industry," Obama said in his letter to Boehner and fellow congressional leaders Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell and Nancy Pelosi. "Our political system has for too long avoided and ignored this important step, and I hope we can come together in a bipartisan manner to get it done."
On the heels of Earth Day, it is nice to see our President take advantage of Boehner's statement and bring some attention to our nation's energy problems and steps that can be taken to help fix it.
