I could not believe what I heard last night on MSNBC when David Gregory was reporting about Osama Bin Laden being killed. I recorded it and played it back several times to make sure. The quote is
"This marks the end of something. This marks a sad end to a period that was so traumatic for the country, but is important for the country. General Petraeus, commander to our forces in Afghanistan, previous to that in Iraq, described Bin Laden as an iconic figure in an interview I did last August, as someone who has been the focus of counterterrorism efforts around the world".
David then went on later to call Osama Obama but that's besides the point, I think.
I don't understand what David Gregory is sad about. Is he sad that he can no longer terrorize the country with endless stories about The War On Terror? Is he sad this "iconic figure" died? Why would any American be sad about OBL being dead? I just found the statement disgusting and possibly revealing the desire of some in the Washington media to put their own self interests in reporting "scary" news above the good of our country.
Maybe he was trying to say something deep and profound in this moment, think on his feet. He failed. Maybe he just didn't have a script.
Am I reading to much into this? Can anyone give me an intelligent reason for his statement?
I am not some conservative blogger bashing the so called "liberal media". I'm a liberal and saw this on MSNBC. I don't have the technology to record something from my DVR as far as I know, but someone must have been recording MSNBC about an hour after Obama's speech and could post the video. Gregory was speaking to Brian Williams.
