Just read on the Washington Post about the doom and gloom squad scaring up people for the next doomsday.
What caught my eye though was this passage:
This time, he insists that he’s right, and by lunchtime Thursday, about 50 area residents joined up with the caravan to support his message. Among them was Gary Vollmer, who took a leave of absence from the Department of Homeland Security to spread the word. He’s supposed to go back on May 23. “But I’m not going back,” he said. “I’ll be gone on the 21st.”
My first thought: People like him are supposed to be analyzing credible threats?
This was followed by: I am so emailing my Senators to complain. (after the fold)
I sent the following to both Sens. Mikulski and Cardin:
Just read an article in the WashingtonPost (http://www.washingtonpost.com/...) about Gary Vollmer, an employee at the Department of Homeland Security taking leave to warn about the end of the world.
Isn't that Department supposed to follow credible threats and not listen to crack-pot theories that the apocalypse is coming?
How do you return to the Department of Homeland Security if your warning of worldwide doom fails to pan out? I mean, either his judgment on the matter is sound, and we won't need a Department of Homeland Security in a few weeks' time, or his judgment is off and he probably shouldn't be working for the DHS in any capacity.
How many other crazy religious zealots work at the Department?
I've always liked my Senators. I've also been emailing them frequently about the seemingly lax oversight Congress has on all the intelligence agencies that have arisen since 9/11. Seems that now those agencies will accept any crazed loon.
If and when I get a response, I'll update this diary. This does seem like one of those oversight duties the Senate is supposed to follow up on don't you think?
