Our government is broken. Our politicians are not acting in America's best interests. Instead, they're acting in the best interests of special interests. The flood of corporate money into political campaigns is corrupting the political process. I'm not saying corporations shouldn't be allowed to lobby. Let's just skip the part where they leave a $100,000 check on the desk when they leave.
This problem started in 1868 when the railroad lobby managed to get the word "natural" omitted from the 14th Amendment which gave equal protection for all citizens. Since the amendment says "persons" Instead of "natural persons", it left the door open for "artificial persons" which is a legal term for corporations. Then in 1886, a corrupt court reporter slipped the idea of corporate constitutional rights into the case summary headnotes of a Supreme Court decision. This is how corporations became people and then money became speech.
To fix our government we need to fix this problem, and to fix it right requires a change to the Constitution. I know that's a big challenge, but if we can petition local, county and eventually state governments, we can bring national attention to this issue. Already in Wisconsin, Madison and Dane County have passed referendums in favor of this constitutional amendment. Other government bodies have done the same.
