I was watching Meet the Press on Sunday and heard Gingrich make his now famous comments. I was surprised, but not sure what positions Newt had previously staked out -- or indeed if someone like Newt is capable of planting his feet on anything but his magic ego carpet ready to flee any which-way anytime, and hadn't considered it worth any real thought or attention since the guy's never had a prayer in hell. I thought maybe it was some strategy to realign to the center, which in normal times would be not just smart but compulsory. There's a reason McCain was chosen despite Limburger's contempt of him. Veritably the contempt of Rush is likely a litmus test for any candidate having any hope of actually becoming president.
Turns out of course it was just a major gaff. In retrospect I see how it happened. Newt was all about his professorial self, parsing things, trying to present intellectual, nuanced answers, and Gregory just tripped him into a corner. It became the only sensible response he could give and maintain his 'Newt the cerebral, reasonable wonk-head' he's worked so long on. Except every time he publishes his batshit crazy emails and books that advantage that kind of logic that would say a guy accidentally fucked someone that wasn't his wife because he cared too much about his country. -- That ain't spelled with an 'o' Newt.
It would be fun is if Newt stayed in the race, knowing full well he has no chance, and debated alongside the others. And, there, became something of the gadfly voice of reason calling out all those others falling over themselves to out teabag the last guy. It likely won't happen, because Newt's too delusional and deeply compromised. But it could be a great parting fuck you to the Party that's gone insane and bloodied the self-styled thinking man in its propeller. Now he just goes down in history as a baffling dick ridiculed by the biggest pork chop dickhead of all time [R.L.] for telling the truth. For which he apologized and will try to walk back through the teabag littered fields in search of the life-giving Kool-Aid tank.
