Seattle
Headed over to the forest yesterday for the first time in a week and walked in dappled shade for the first time this year. Big-leaf Maple, Black Cottonwood, Red Alder, Dogwood. The last layer of the canopy has closed.
Sword fern fronds, stinging nettles and bracken fern are at shoulder height in some places. Lady Fern is thigh high. Deer Fern has begun to unfurl. Licorice Fern is fading.
First Western Tanagers of the year. First Pacific-slope Flycatcher calling from the canopy. Townsend's Warblers and Yellow-rumped Warblers singing. Wilson's Warblers preening. One Winter Wren singing. Red-breasted Nuthatches yank-yanking. One Barred-owl kid near the nest whining its hissy-whine.
