Seattle.
The big crows in the forest are getting belligerent - challenging me as I walk the same paths we've all shared for years. Some afternoons a feathered honor guard accompanies me for a hundred feet or so, then peels off back into the forest. Behind them, way back up there in the trees, is a shrill, incessant "waahh...waahhh.....waaaaahhh".....
"Why don't I ever see baby crows?".
People ask me this question a lot and it's a good one. The answer is that you do see baby crows, especially this time of year up here in the Pacific Northwest. What's tricky is that by the time the crow kids fledge they're as big as an adult. What you want to look for is the clumsy one, the shrill one, the one skuffling along the ground after another crow, the one with the brown shawl feathered across its shoulders, the one with the big red gaping mouth.
Any day now.
