Insightful comment on HP:
The Weiner fiasco teaches us something unfortunate about Democrats: if you help them, they'll be your friends.
But the minute you're in trouble, they will pretend they don't know you. It's part of that cravenness Democrats are known for.
In this respect, Republicans have it all over the Dems. Repubs have a tremendous herd instinct--they stick up for one another (which says a lot, given the terrible things Republicans are always doing).
You almost never hear a Republican calling for the resignation of one of their own. Poor Weiner, by contrast, has been virtually deserted by his party. It's just another form of caving to the right, it seems to me.
Think what you want about what Anthony Weiner did. Make your personal judgements about his "morality" even though it's presumptuous for you to do so. Come to the conclusion that he lied to keep his job rather than to tell his wife, which seems like the more obvious conclusion.
But I will still stick by the notion that, despite this "distraction" (which, lets face it people, will be out of the news - replaced by something else - in a heartbeat), this says more about Democrats lack of spine than it does about this man's stupid mistakes.
If two things happen, I think he's out of the woods and this whole thing will wither. If his wife stands by him on this and his constituents, who seem to still be with him in numbers, have his back. Then... what more can anyone possibly make out of this? Both sides in the last decade have had their sexual scandals. Hell, Newt Gingrich is probably the last person who'd want to talk about this kind of thing. I think it's old news.
Democrats are always on the right side of the argument but are NEVER strong enough to fight. Really. Who gives a flying fuck how righteous you are when you're willing to give up the farm on those issues you say you believe in - and also show you will abandon your own in a hot second.
I still maintain that this is less about Weiner than it is about our representatives. We expect them to fight the right fight. They've shown us they have been unwilling, for years, to fight ANY fight.
