New ROV up: Fukushima - No fix in sight for radioactive water overflow - ROV #60
This is another clearinghouse diary for the posting of additional news (with links to their source) and intelligent commentary about the ongoing nuclear disaster(s) in Japan.
THE JNI coverage is for reporting and analysis of events in Japan following the March 11 Disaster -- the earthquake, tsunami and meltdowns at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. JNI is NOT a place for editorializing or POVs on nuclear power. The ROV does not replace breaking news, but rather serves as homebase for ongoing updates throughout the week.
Please provide links to credible news stories.
UPDATE: Follow live news & commentary at diaries on REC list. Currently, FOoW reporting on Fukushima 4 Spent Fuel Pool in Critical Condition
For older information on news and a timeline of the events following the March 11 Japanese Earthquake, visit the Mothership. The Mothership provides a more extensive list of news and data sources, social media, crisis mapping and other relevant information. Although the ROV's aren't too shabby either.
Latest Figures from March 11 Disaster:
• 90,000 people still live in shelters, over three quarters of whom come from the 20km evacuated area around the Fukushima-1 plant.
• 15,405 people confirmed dead
• 8,095 missing
• 3 reactors at Fukushima (1, 2 and 3) melted through with the nuclear fuel burning through the inner containment vessels and entering outer steel linings. TEPCO is cooling the reactors and trying to contain radioactive leakage. The operator has installed a circulatory cooling system for the spent nuclear fuel pool at reactor 2.
“TEPCO and the government of Japan have known from the first few days of this incident that there were three full meltdowns that had occurred. This information was kept from the public,” he told RT. “The situation currently is, as you say, that there’s been a melt-through of the initial containment into the secondary containment. And at this point what we hope is that the melted core will not melt through that second containment.” Dr. Robert Jacobs, Professor of nuclear history at Hiroshima Peace Institute to Russia Today. Leaks could delay treatment of radioactive waterAsahi 6/11
TEPCO said June 10 it found water seeping from a valve and at more than 10 pipe joints of the system during testing ahead of the scheduled start June 15.
"The start of operations could be delayed somewhat," said Junichi Matsumoto, acting general manager of TEPCO's Nuclear Power and Plant Siting Division. "We don't know how many repairs are needed because we have not fully grasped the situation."
The company expects the system to substantially reduce the amount of highly radioactive water accumulated at reactor buildings and turbine buildings.
TEPCO: Radiation waste to total 2,000 cubic meters Asahi, 6/11
The amount of radiation waste created from the treatment of highly radioactive water at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant is estimated at 2,000 cubic meters, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said June 9.
... Details on how to dispose of the radiation waste have yet to be determined.
TEPCO will operate equipment on June 15 to purify radioactive water. During the process, radioactive substances in the water, such as cesium, strontium and iodine, will be either separated by a special chemical agent or removed by zeolite, an agent that absorbs cesium.

Rules of the Road
Given the seriousness of this situation, please use this diary for posting information DIRECTLY Related to coverage of the developing news!
The "ROV" (a Remote Operating Vehicle) is a 'child diary' for liveblog coverage of major breaking news stories. (The term was borrowed from the Gulf Watchers coverage of the Deep Water Horizon crisis.)
To continue following and participating in the breaking coverage in Japan Nuclear Incidents series, click here and then click the heart icon underneath the profile picture to the Right. This will bring these diaries directly into your personal "stream."
Due to slowing news coverage, Coverage@KOS is including diaries covering a few day periods. All coverage is then archived to the group page.
You can assist us in including relevant diaries by providing links to any postings we may have missed to insure they are included in this coverage. Also, note below if diaries are being reposted to other groups so we can direct readers there as well.
Please be kind to Kossacks with bandwidth issues. Please do not post images or videos. Again, many thanks for this.
Remember when posting to the thread: STICK TO THE FACTS. Source and link all new information. (This includes insuring authenticity of twitter sources.) Both the Mothership and the ROVs are for reporting and discussing the developing news. Neither space is for opinions or for editorializing on the subject of nuclear energy. The JNI team has decided that diaries which are not factual or which sensationalize this event are not included in Coverage@Kos.
