Yesterday was a pretty bad day for the people of Christchurch. after suffering over 7,000 quakes after last Septembers 7.2 quake, which included the fatal 6.3 one, two large quakes struck. First a 5.5 then not long after a 6.0. Both were about 11 km deep.

About 15,000 homes and businesses in Christchurch remain without power, mostly in the eastern suburbs.
The council reports 90 per cent of people on the flat have water back on. Hills suburbs have low water pressure.
There is no water east of Ferrymead bridge and repairs are expected to take several days, the council says.
Tankers of drinking water are in two locations in the Sumner area and seven more will be operational this morning.
People in all areas of the city are being asked to boil water.
The Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant is operational, but the quakes caused some additional damage to pipes in the eastern suburbs.
Repair teams are working to fix two wastewater pump stations. Anyone with a chemical toilet or nearby portaloo is urged to use it

4:49 PM PT: GNS has upgraded yesterdays largest quake to a 6.3 and its changed the depth to 6kms.. so about HALVED the depth.
5:39 PM PT: Canterbury District Health Board says an elderly rest home resident has died after yesterday's Christchurch earthquakes.
Spokeswoman Amy Milne says the authority was only made aware of the death this morning and no further details were available. The death was understood to be as a result of the quakes.
12:27:Another aftershock has just jolted Christchurch. Residents on Twitter estimate it to have been around magnitude 4.5.

BREAKING: STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS JUST BEEN DECLARED IN CHRISTCHURCH.
8:01 PM PT: 2:55pm: A local State of Emergency has been declared in Christchurch.
Prime Minister John Key has just addressed media, after his first look at the city since the quakes yesterday.
He says he's spoken with Bob Parker and they're confident a state of emergency is what's required.
