I had this weird idea while watching Jon Benjamin Has a Van. He basically shoved his buddy across the border with no passport to return. The skit then fast forwarded to show his friend having made a life and family in Mexico.

So here is the idea. Many undocumented workers come here not knowing the language and with little money or means to survive. What if an American, with little knowledge of Spanish tried to make it in Mexico? I think it would shed light on the trials these workers face here, if Americans saw just how hard the reverse situation was.

In my field, I can take time off pretty much whenever, albeit unpaid, so I'm game for a year in Mexico. Am I crazy or does this sound like something people would like to read about and/or watch? I know it sounds a bit off, but I think it would be interesting to flip the whole "immigrants are stealing our jobs" tagline on its head.

This diary is pretty much just me ranting about how crappy it is that people with initiative who come here to work and take care of their family are treated like criminals. I mean, all the epithets thrown at undocumented workers are levied by people who think they came here to have it easy. They do not have it easy. They work their asses off for less than minimum wage, and people say they are stealing our jobs. I don't know a single American who would pick strawberries for twelve hours each day and receive $3 per hour.

So I don't know, I wonder what it would be like for an American working in Mexico. Would their farms pay similar rates to a gringo as they do their current help? Would people demand I learn the language or go home? Would there be as much resentment for an American stealing their jobs?

I think it would be an interesting sociological experiment, and hell, it might make a decent documentary as well.

/me just spouting off crazy thoughts off the top of my head again

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

has taken the responsibility over, since my pancreatitis mandated a year without alcohol, fatty foods or dairy products. My doc told me it was something way worse, but after almost a week in hospital, I found out it was just acute pancreatitis, not the other thing. My TTFN diary was a bit morbid looking back. I was fucking scared though so...

I'm basically vegan now, and running five miles a day, so I feel better than I have ever felt. I'm very well, I hope you are too bro.

      •  Hey! Me too! (0+ / 0-)

On the wagon that is. My doc recommended I stop drinking immediately after my liver showed irritation in some labwork for my type2 diabetes. UGH. Growing old... Going on 2 months with no drinking, although I have been enjoying Clausthaler Amber NA (non alcohol) beer.  I'm hopeful to return in moderation at some point, we'll see what she (my doc) says though.

Not quite on the vegan diet, we do meatless Mondays and a few other meatless days of the week, but mostly watching the carbs, and when we do eat carbs its whole grain everything and brown rice, etc..

Glad you are doing so well and yes, your diary was morbid and scared me, so don't do that! LOL

I had to pick up my dumb ass friend at the bottom of the U.S. border after he barely made it out alive.  He got drunk, took a piss and landed in jail with nothing.  He couldn't even call and they (the corrupt police, that is) took his i.d. so he couldn't get back in the country.  He snuck back in, so maybe you, too, can experience what that feels like.  I also had to pay off the people who brought him into the U.S.  Thanks asshole!

Another of my friends was killed by the Mexican police because he wouldn't pay their bribe.  Left behind two boys under five and one on the way.

Suffice it to say, the gangs and police don't tolerate American stupid, so stay sober, pay them off when you need to and don't piss on their land.

If you're doing it for the lulz, well, most likely you'll get lulzed.

And by the way hi guy.

Illegal immigrants in Mexico receive pretty horrifying treatment.

Stories on illegal Gringos in Mexico are a little harder to quantify.  There are some illegal immigrants working as scuba instructors, timeshare sales reps, bartenders, etc.  They usually don't receive the treatment noted in the link above.
